There’s been a noticeable rise in questions about occupations shifting on or off Australia’s visa lists, and it’s no surprise. Any hint of change tends to create understandable concern for individuals planning their migration pathway and for employers trying to secure the skills they need. Right now, the first stage of consultation has begun, which has prompted more conversation than usual.
As part of this early work, the Jobs and Skills Department has released the 2025 Occupation Shortage List. The OSL identifies occupations that may be at risk of shortage across the country, drawing on labour market data, industry insight and workforce trends. While it’s not a migration tool, it gives a clear picture of where pressure points may be emerging.
It’s important to understand that the OSL is not the same as the occupation lists used for the 482 and 186 visas. These visa lists are maintained by Home Affairs and have their own assessment process. However, the OSL does play a role in feeding information into those discussions. It helps guide where further analysis might be needed and which occupations may require a closer look during consultation.
That said, the OSL is an indicator, not a prediction. In some years it has been a reliable early warning that certain occupations may move onto or off the visa lists. In other cases, nothing changes at all. It can flag areas worth watching, but it doesn’t confirm that updates are coming.
For now, what we do know is that new visa occupation lists are expected in early 2026. That timeline gives individuals and employers plenty of space to stay informed and plan ahead. Whether you’re considering a skilled visa, preparing an employer nomination, or simply trying to understand what these developments might mean for your occupation, keeping an eye on the consultation process is a smart step.
As more information comes through, we’ll continue to keep people updated so they can navigate these changes with confidence and clarity.
