Visa holders can do any kind of work in any occupation however there are restraints on the duration that they may work for one employer.

Visa holders are limited to a six month employment period in the one location as a general rule

The six month rule: 

  • Can not be employed at one location for more than 6 months, without prior permission in writing from the Department (this can only be provided in limited circumstances – ask us!).
  • The six months starts from the day the employee starts to work
  • The six months are based on calendar months, not hours worked.
  • There are some exemptions, see below.

What are some of the exemptions:

  • The work is in tourism and hospitality these include:
  • Hotel, motel, bed and breakfast, or backpacker hostel, Café, restaurant, takeaway food shop or catering premises, Pub, tavern club or bar other hospitality or accommodation business, tourism business
  • The work is in health, food processing, health, aged and disability care and childcare, agriculture, plant and animal cultivation or natural disaster recovery anywhere in Australia.
  • The work is in the fishing and pearling, tree farming and felling, construction or mining sectors in Northern Australia.
  • For others ask us!
  • Employee changes their location of work these include:
    • Working from home, working remotely, working from a different location for the same business, being self-employed (if they are not solely providing business services to a business.)

FAQ’s: 

  • How many Working Holiday Visas can I have?
    • Up to three (passport held dependent) if you meet the eligibility criteria (ask us)
  • Is there an age limit for this visa?
    • Yes, in most cases 30.  You must apply before your 30th birthday.  However,there are some passport holders allowed to be up to 35 (ask us)
  • What are the current department lodgement fees?
    • $650.00 as at current.
  • Can you study on this visa?
    • Yes, you may study for up to four months
  • Can I travel to and from Australia on this visa?
    • Yes, you may travel to and from Australia as many times as you want
