The new Skills in Demand (SID) visa is replacing the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Subclass 482 visa, bringing several important changes. As specialists in Australian immigration and visa solutions, PR Migration is here to break down the key updates and explain what they mean for businesses and individuals seeking to navigate this evolving landscape.
Skills in Demand Visa Replaces TSS 482 Visa
Effective from 7 December 2024, the Skills in Demand (SID) visa will take over from the previous TSS visa (Subclass 482).
As part of this change, the SID visa will be subject to the same regulations that applied to the TSS visa, with certain enhancements and refinements. For example, the visa now includes a broader scope for highly skilled workers through the introduction of the Specialist Skills stream, which was not available under the TSS visa. We have all the details so can discuss the full intricacies of the changes contact us now at [email protected]
Pathways to Residency under the Transition Stream
One of the most significant changes for those currently on the TSS visa is the introduction of eligibility of visa holders who qualify broadly under the Core Skills Stream & Specialist Skills Stream can now transition to permanent residency under the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme after just 12 months. The good news is that the work experience clock no longer resets if you change employers—this allows for greater flexibility in job mobility without losing your path to residency.
English Language Requirements Now the Same Across All SID Visa Streams
In a move towards greater consistency, the English language requirements for all streams of the SID visa will now be the same. This change eliminates the previous differentiation between the streams with both moving across to what was previously the Medium-Long Term Stream requirements.
For applicants across the Core Skills and Specialist Skills streams, the English proficiency required is an overall IELTS score of 5.0 (or equivalent) with a minimum score of 5.0 in each individual component (with other approved English test options also). With this shift, all applicants can now expect a more straightforward process when meeting language requirements, irrespective of their chosen stream.
Three Streams Under the Skills in Demand Visa
The SID visa introduces three distinct streams, each designed to support and engage different types of skilled workers:
- Specialist Skills Stream
This stream is aimed at highly skilled applicants earning a minimum of $135,000 per year (excluding occupations in ANZSCO Major Groups 3, 7 and 8 which cover certain trade and labor occupations). It is designed to attract top-tier talent in high-demand fields to Australia. - Core Skills Stream
For applicants with jobs listed on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), this stream applies to those earning at least $73,150 per year. Many occupations under the previous TSS visa that did not make it onto the Core Skills Occupation List may still be eligible under the Specialist Skills or Labour Agreement streams. - Labour Agreement Stream
This stream retains the same structure as the previous TSS visa’s Labour Agreement stream, providing an avenue for employers to sponsor skilled workers in cases where other visa options may not apply.
Visa Application Charge Updated to $3,115 for All Streams
One of the key updates to the SID visa is the Visa Application Charge (VAC), which has now been standardised across all three streams. The charge is $3,115 for the base application. This fee aligns with that as previously applied to the Medium-Term Stream of the TSS visa, and the costs remain consistent across the different streams of the new SID visa with no reduction as there was with Short Term Occupations.
